The CW ax continues to fall with Stargirl becoming the latest casualty of the cull. The show will end in December with its season three finale.
It seems that DC cancelations at The CW are still coming with Stargirl being the latest casualty. Although the third season of the show has been airing on the network and it seemed to have avoided the ax, Deadline reported that Stargirl will join the hefty list of scripted shows to have been ended at The CW in the last six months. Stargirl will come to an end on December 7 when the season three finale airs.
While many of the previously canceled series were ended without any warning, it seems that the Stargirl team was aware that the sword of Damocles was hanging over them and had the chance to write a suitable ending for the show. Stargirl creator Geoff Johns said of the news:
“Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons. With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure. The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations. I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built!”
Stargirl star Brec Bassinger also commented on the ending of the series, thanking everyone who has supported the show, and calling her time as part of the DC franchise the “greatest honor.” She said:
“Getting to play Stargirl and be a part of the DC Universe has been the greatest honor, and I am so grateful for every moment of it. I would like to thank our fearless leader Geoff Johns, along with WBTV, The CW, the cast and crew of Stargirl, and of course, the fans. Thank you. This show will forever live in my heart.”
Is Stargirl The Only Show Being Canceled At The CW?
The CW is now under new ownership, with Nexstar having recently purchased a 75% share in the network, leaving current owners Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery with 12.5% each. While Nexstar will still be drawing content from both studios along with other providers, so far the majority of news coming from The CW is all about what shows will not be continuing on the network.
Back in May, DC fans were shocked when the ax fell on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman and new series Naomi. In addition to this, The Flash was later announced to be ending with its 9th season, and numerous other shows such as Dynasty, Charmed, Nancy Drew and Riverdale have all bitten the dust. Whether Stargirl will be the last of the cancelations is yet to be seen, but the number of popular shows still active on the network is continuing to tick downwards.
